Velocity-induced collapses of stable neutron stars

چکیده
The collapse of spherical neutron stars is studied in General Relativity. The initial state is a stable neutron star to which an inward radial kinetic energy has been added through some velocity profile. For two different equations of state and two different shapes of velocity profiles, it is found that neutron stars can collapse to black holes for high enough inward velocities, provided that their masses are higher than some minimal value, depending on the equation of state. For a polytropic equation of state of the form p = Kρ , with γ = 2 it is found

Double Neutron Stars: Evidence For Two Different Neutron-Star Formation Mechanisms
Six of the eight double neutron stars known in the Galactic disk have low orbital eccentricities (< 0.27) indicating that their second-born neutron stars received only very small velocity kicks at birth. This is similar to the case of the B-emission X-ray binaries, where a sizable fraction of the neutron stars received hardly any velocity kick at birth (Pfahl et al. 2002). The masses of the sec...
متن کاملStrangeness and Metastable Neutron Stars : What Might have Happened to SN 1987 A
Immediately after they are born, neutron stars are characterized by an entropy per baryon of order unity and by the presence of trapped neutrinos. If the only hadrons in the star are nucleons, these effects slightly reduce the maximum mass relative to cold, catalyzed matter. However, if negatively charged particles in the form of hyperons, a kaon condensate, or quarks are also present, these ef...
متن کاملSpin and Isospin Asymmetry, Equation of State and Neutron Stars
In the present work, we have obtained the equation of state for neutron star matter considering the in uence of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin state. We have also investigated the structure of neutron stars. According to our results, the spin asymmetry stiens the equation of state and leads to high mass for the neutron star.
متن کاملConditions for Steady Gravitational Radiation from Accreting Neutron Stars
The gravitational-wave and accretion driven evolution of the angular velocity, core temperature, and (small) amplitude of an r-mode of neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries and similar systems is investigated. The conditions required for evolution to a stable equilibrium state (with gravitational wave flux proportional to average X-ray flux) are determined. In keeping with conclusions derive...
متن کاملPopulation synthesis of old neutron stars in the Galaxy
The paucity of old isolated accreting neutron stars in ROSAT observations is used to derive a lower limit on the mean velocity of neutron stars at birth. The secular evolution of the population is simulated following the paths of a statistical sample of stars for different values of the initial kick velocity, drawn from an isotropic Gaussian distribution with mean velocity 0 ≤ V ≤ 550 km s −1. ...
